Ahuano is a missionary-centre with two schools and a small „health station“, a sometimes working radio-telephone box, electricity since 1995, and a number of small shops, that are all offering the same: cans with tuna, salt, rubber boots, sugar, hard liquor, dynamite for fishing etc.
About 40 families are living it the main village, mostly immigrates from other parts of Ecuador that have moved during the last 30 years. The natives on the other hand, the Quichuas del Oriente, are living spread out around the village in 80 families, some of them very large ones. For the most people the river is the main transport-way, and depending on their financial situation they are moving on it with motor canoes, dugouts or rafts.
