The animal-rehabilitation-centre amaZOOnico is situated in the middle of the protected GSR preserve and is sheltering a number of different animals, some endangered from extinct. The station has been built 1993,but its history already began a couple of years earlier.
The animals are getting here by different ways:
- 40% from private people
They are buying the animals out of pity or as pets from illegal trades and are at best bringing them directly to us.
Though it happens quite often, that these animals are already sick or maladjusted until they are brought here, ore that people are simply not interested in them anymore.
- 20% from foundations
They are also receiving the animals from private persons.
- 20% from the state (INEFAN)
The animals are confiscated trough police-controls in Tena or Baeza.
- 20% from the Selva Viva environs
These animals are brought hurt or sometimes brought as a gift (for example if the young has survived the shooting of its mother)
Mainly animals with a high social behaviour prefer to live in half-captivety. This means, they are free and can leave all the time, but mostly they spend tehir time around the station. Some of the animals have to be put into enclosures, partyly until the end of their lives. These are the reasons:
- Young animals without mother have to be protected from other animals
- sick animals for taking care and because they could infect other animals
- aggressive animals that are not able to be released
- popular hunting animals with a big territory, that got used to humans and are no longer scared of them
- weak animals that could not survive on their own
- animals, that have lost their natural instincts
The animals that are getting here are more than often in a very bad condition, as you may see with this little Common Squirrel Monkey. The fur has been torn away by the chain on which the monkey has been tied up, its tail is nearly hairless, as it had to sleep on its faeces on the floor.
Basicly it is as followed:
- 1/3 of the animals can be released into wilderness
- 1/3 is staying at the amaZOOnico
- 1/3 of the animals dies
